ㅇ Abstract
A number of extremely cold winters have occurred in recent years over central North America, northwestern Europe, and East Asia and have exerted a severe social and economic impact in spite of the long-term global warming trend. The negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) has been suggested as a cause of these anomalous mid-latitude cold winters and a clear understanding of the cause for this negative trend in AO index embedded in the global warming becomes central to the debate. This study reviews possible mechanism of the negative AO in recent decades and focuses on the relation between Arctic amplification (warming) and recent abnormal winter variability.
