Researchers from the APEC Climate Center (APCC) and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have discovered a major shift in the East Asian summer front, the region’s main pathway for rain-bearing clouds.
Driven by recent climate change, the front now remains much further north in September rather than making its typical southward retreat, simultaneously driving up the risks of late-summer heatwaves and torrential downpours. Led by Dr. Suyeon Moon of APCC, alongside co-authors Dr. OkYeon Kim of APCC and Prof. Hyungjun Kim of KAIST, the study was published in npj Climate and Atmospheric Science, a leading international journal in the field.
