The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Climate Center (APCC), in collaboration with Weatherpia Co., Ltd. and external experts has initiated the project "Strengthening Climate Resilience in Peru through Enhanced Climate Information Services and Capacity building for Climate Change Monitoring and Prediction“ supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) from October 2024. The project is scheduled to conclude in May 2025.

This initiative, carried out with the active cooperation of the SENAMHI, aims to ensure the effective utilization of SENAMHI's climate information to enhance the capacity of various regions in Peru to respond proactively to extreme climate events. To achieve this, a couple of on-site survey was conducted in October and November in 2024. These surveys involved in-depth interviews with diverse stakeholders, including government ministries, related organizations, local producers, and NGOs, to analyze local needs, capacity and the circumstances.

Based on the interviews and demand assessments, the team shared preliminary findings with stakeholders at a workshop held on November 29, 2024, at the Auditorium in the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation of Peru (MIDAGRI). More than 60 participants, including representatives from SENAMHI, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, the Ministry of Environment, and other partner organizations and stakeholders were participated in this workshop. Attendees collectively acknowledged the importance of climate information services and the necessity for multifaceted and continuous cooperation.

Eng. Gabriela Rosas Benancio, Executive President of SENAMHI, expressed her hopes that collaboration with international partners such as APCC would lead to the provision of high-quality climate services to vulnerable sectors, thereby strengthening national climate resilience. She also voiced her support and expectations for continued collaboration.

Through this project, the team plans to develop a medium- to long-term roadmap to enhance Peru’s climate resilience. They will also propose priority follow-up initiatives (Track 2 project in KOICA) to achieve these goals. Using insights from the field surveys, the project aims to support the activation and expansion of SENAMHI’s Agricultural Climate Management Platform (PGA) and enhance the technical capabilities for climate prediction and data analysis, enabling the implementation of more effective climate information services.

The project will be further refined through the third on-site visit scheduled for February 2025.
