The APEC Climate Center (APCC) conducted the 2016 Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S) Training Program from June 27th, to July 2nd, 2016 at the APCC Headquarters in Busan, Korea. The training topic was “S2S as a new epoch in climate-based application: using S2S prediction to cope with extreme hydrological events in developing countries”. There were 19 participants from 10 Asia-Pacific countries that currently work in the area of hydro-meteorology participating in this training program.
Extreme hydrological events such as droughts and floods occur often and cause great harm to the population and infrastructure during this period. To decrease the impacts of these types of events, countries in the Asia-Pacific region can utilize the highly-reliable S2S prediction information for disaster preparedness in socioeconomic areas such as agriculture and water resources. S2S prediction information is climate forecast information that provides climate prediction for the period between 2 weeks (15 days) and 2 months (60 days).
Through the training program, the 19 participants from 10 Asia-Pacific countries learned the concept of S2S prediction, its applications to extreme hydrological events such as monsoons, tropical cyclones, and water resource management, and also had opportunities through hands-on sessions to put into practice the concepts they learned through the lectures.
