Dr. Jong Ahn Chun from APCC was recognized for the best paper presentation at the 1st International Conference on Innovative Technologies for a Sustainable Environment (ICITSE 2020) that was held virtually on Dec. 28th, 2020.

Dr. Chun presented the research results of his paper, entitled “Evaluation of near-real time weekly root-zone Soil Moisture Index (SMI) for the extreme climate monitoring web-service across East Asia”.

During his paper presentation at the ICITSE2020, he introduced the extreme event monitoring system for East Asia operated by the APEC Climate Center. He particularly focused on how the system was developed using the Soil Moisture Index.

This study has the potential to be useful in reducing the socioeconomic damages resulting from climate extremes by comprehensively characterizing extreme drought events.

ICITSE 2020 was held to provide a platform for participants from various industries, government agencies, non-government agencies, and the academe to share their knowledge on environmental technologies that are efficient, sustainable, and economical. The Society of Environmental Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (SEEP) was the organizer and host of the ICITSE 2020.
