The APEC Climate Center (APCC) implemented the second training program of 2017 on “User-oriented Statistical Downscaling of Climate Information” for 39 participants from working groups or research institutions, comprised of 16 organizations and universities in Korea in the fields of Agriculture, Water Resources, Environment, Marine, and Disaster Prevention. This training was held at the APCC headquarters in Haeundae, Busan from September 28th to 29th.

As opposed to APCC’s usual educational focus on developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region, this training program targeted domestic institutions and universities in the fields of agriculture, water resources, environment, marine, and disaster prevention to support the users of climate information in Korea.

The training featured the use of climate information and detailed relevant techniques. APCC educated these Climate Information Users on how to produce, evaluate and utilize user-friendly climate information that is suitable for the application for agriculture, water resources, environment, marine, and disaster prevention.

APCC also included a training on how to use the user-friendly APCC Integrated Modelling Solution (AIMS) platform, which produces climate change outlook scenarios adjusted by regional attributes linked to domestic climate change scenarios with climate observation data. Through this and other APCC programs, climate information users in Korea can thus establish effective regional climate change action for the future using climate change outlooks.

At the end of the program, APCC held a discussion and consultation with participants on the needs and priorities for climate information in Korea. This feedback will help improve user-satisfaction of climate information production systems and user systems in a domestic setting and will be reflected in the development and improvement of APCC’s climate service.

Through this and other programs, APCC hopes to generate collaborative opportunities and foster cooperative projects that develop the ability of domestic organizations and universities to use climate information.
